The Canfield Village Middle School’s seventh- and eighth-grade choirs presented the annual spring concert at the Canfield High School on May 7. The choirs, including the Cardinal Chorale, were under the direction of Stephanie Summers and were accompanied on piano by Jodine Pilmer, on bass by Nate Gelfand, on drums by Bryan Teeters and on violin by Stephen Sansoterra.
Summers welcomed the large audience of family and friends to the concert.
“Good evening and thank you for coming tonight. We have a great show for you with lots of additions with all our accompanists. We will start with the Cardinal Chorale, which is made up of both seventh- and eighth-graders. If I may take a moment, the Cardinal Chorale competed in the Ohio Music Educator Association’s Large Group Conference and was the only middle school choir to perform. They received three superior ratings from the three judges, which is quite an accomplishment,” Summers said.
The Cardinal Chorale opened the show with “Sing a Joyful Song” by Cynthia Gray and then sang “The River Sleeps beneath the Sky,” a poem by Paul Lawrence Dunbar, arranged by Mary Lynn Lightfoot.
The choir then performed “Hear That Fiddle Play,” a medley of American folk songs arranged by John Purifoy. The choir was accompanied by Sansoterra on violin. The Cardinal Chorale closed its performance with a rendition of “We Will Rock You.”
The seventh-grade choir took the stage to perform “Elijah Rock!,” a traditional spiritual, arranged by R. Emerson, and then sang “Twist and Shout” by Bert Russell and Phil Medley, arranged by Mac Huff. The choir concluded their portion of the show with “Roar” by Perry, McKee, Martin, Gottwald and Walter, arranged by M. Brymer.
Seventh-grade students who served as narrators, and prepared their own narrations, included, Ethan Schenker, Andrea Klempay, Hunter Patterson and Layalli Kusuni.
The eighth-grade choir, performing its last middle school concert, began its presentation with “The Rising of the Moon,” an Irish folk song, arranged by R. Emerson. The choir was accompanied by Sansoterra on violin. The choir then sang “A Disney Silly Sing-Along,” arranged by Alan Billingsley, and then moved onto to “Brave” by Bareilles and Antonoff, arranged by A. Snyder. Soloists performing during this song included Emily Dunko and Mariah Cashbaugh, with Isabella Audia, Andrew Kern, Kat Roman and Kayla Fekety performing as an ensemble.
The students performed their last song as middle school students and closed the show with “Like an Eagle” by Carl Strommen.
Eighth-grade narrators included Dominic DeRamo, Mariah Cashbaugh, Andrew Kern and Luigi Rohrbaugh.
“Thank you for coming. I just want to say I have enjoyed these eighth-grade students so much. They are nice people and there are many talented singers in this group. I have been teaching a majority of them since they were in fifth grade and I have seen them change and grow over the years. I will miss them terribly. Thank you again and have a great summer,” Summers said.
