BOARDMAN

Looking for something to keep your kids entertained this weekend?

The township has an offer: free food, music, wagon rides and much more.

The township will host Community Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the township government center, 8299 Market St.

“We hope to see people out there. It’s a really good community event,” said township Administrator Jason Loree. “It’s nice to be able to provide that type of family-fun event to the public.”

Perhaps the biggest draw for this year’s event is the local debut of the new Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream & Yogurt truck.

“It’s the first time they’re actually going to use their truck for a venue, which we’re really excited about,” said Trustee Brad Calhoun.

Other offerings will include face painting, informational displays, a bounce-around, a helicopter landing, wagon rides to the Southern Park Stables on Washington Boulevard, a fire-department safety trailer that people can visit, and the chance for children to explore safety and law enforcement vehicles.

“All township vehicles will be out on display, and kids can ... climb in them,” Loree said.

The county sheriff’s office also will be there with child-identification kits that parents can get.

The event, Calhoun says, is a longtime township tradition that has continued to grow over the years and now usually has about 2,000 visitors.

“It’s a fun, free event,” he said. “I remember one lady coming up to me last year, saying, ‘Being a single mother, my kids had a blast here for two hours.’”

“We may be a big township, but I’d like to have this feeling that we are a little community,” Calhoun said.

Those attending the event are asked to park along Tod Avenue or in the road department parking lot in the township government complex, directly in front of the road department garage.
