Various speakers came to Career Day at Austintown Middle School on May 21. Ranging from firefighters and police officers to speakers from Mary Kay and Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, these career professionals spoke to students about what they do, why they do it and how they came into the field.

Career Day stretched throughout the entire day — students had the opportunity to see four different speakers among the various speakers at the middle school.

Joe Skowron, a Navy recruiter, came to speak with the students about his different take on his career with the military.

“I kind of joined to buy myself some extra time before I decided what I needed to do,” Skowron said. “Eighteen years later here I am, two years before I can retire.”

Skowron said his favorite part of this event was answering the questions and seeing the interest in the military.

“I’ve had an unconventional career,” Skowron said. “I’ve been in for 18 years and 14 of those years I’ve been in recruitment — which you don’t see too much. I grew up around here, I went to Fitch, so to be able to talk about it is really nice.”

Mancini attracted the students wanting autographs and knowledge about a boxing career. He said he enjoyed Career Day “very much so,” because of all the welcoming students at Austintown Middle School.

Colleen Fiest, a Mary Kay consultant, said she enjoyed talking to the students about her field.

“It was fun — it was my first time,” Fiest said. “I love Mary Kay.”

Fiest handed out goodie bags and business cards if they had any further questions about being a consultant.

Parent-Teacher Association members were responsible for this event led by organizer Lynn Mickey.
