Make duct tape wallets

Looking for a Father’s Day gift? Join the Boardman library for this DIY Duct Tape Wallet program. This event is for children entering grades 4-6 only and the event will take place on June 18 at 6 p.m.

Sensory story time

Join the Boardman library for a family story time for children of all ages with a sensory focus on June 27 at 2 p.m.

This program is designed for children with different needs, including those with Autism, speech/language delays, cognitive impairments, AD/HD and other special needs and challenges. We will enjoy books, music and sensory stations with a schedule board and double visuals. Children must attend with an adult.

Lego my library

Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Boardman library on June 13 from 2-3 p.m. and on June 25 at 6 p.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, ages 6 and up.

Family Story Time

Join the Boardman library for stories and fun for children of all ages on June 10 and 17* (Father’s Day stories and craft) at 10 a.m. Parents are invited to join their children in this 30-minute program.

Crafting is my super power

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a super craft made by “super children” of all ages at the Boardman library during normal library hours in the month of June.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months on June 13, 19 and 27 at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library. There will be twenty minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Columbus Children’s Theater presents “Sleeping Beauty”

The Columbus Children’s Theater will present “Sleeping Beauty” at the Boardman library on June 24 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

All ages are welcome. Children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult.

Taylor Kia makes donation to Boardman Stadium project

The Boardman Stadium Project has announced a major donation by a local company to fund the construction of the new stadium that is scheduled to open in the fall of 2015. Taylor Kia of Boardman is contributing $150,000 and will be recognized with the Taylor Kia Press Box. A brief check presentation will occured on May 27 during the Boardman High School Honors Assembly in the gymnasium.

Ruggieri is quarterfinalist for music educator award

Boardman High School Band Director, Tom Ruggieri is a quarterfinalist for the Music Educator Award at the Grammy’s. For the second consecutive year, Ruggieri was nominated and named as a quarterfinalist in the prestigious national awards program.

Last year was the first time in the history of the Grammy’s that the Music Educator Award was presented.

Dr. Ted Suzelis hosts free seminar

Dr. Ted Suzelis, N.D. will be presenting a free seminar titled, “Strong Bones” on June 11 starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Ohio Naturopathic Wellness Center in Boardman, SouthBridge West Complex, locates at 755 Boardman-Canfield Road, Suite D-3. Slavic scholarship for YSU students

The Simply Slavic committee has announced that is seeking applicants for its academic scholarship and they are looking no further than Youngstown State University. Undergraduate YSU students who have completed their freshman year and are currently enrolled at YSU are encouraged to apply for the $500 scholarship. All applicants will be required to submit a 500-word essay on how being Slavic affects their lives. Applicants need to be able to substantiate that they are of at least 25 percent Slavic heritage (This requirement is waived for members of YSU’s Slavic Student Association). Funds can be used for scholarships, as well as applied to study abroad programs.

Kayak tours

There will be kayak tours beginning at the East Newport boat launch on June 13 from 10 a.m. until noon or 1-3 p.m., June 26 from 8:30-10:30 a.m. (not for first time kayakers, must be 18-years-old) and June 27 from 10 a.m. until noon. Age and experience restrictions apply. Register and pay two days days prior to the event at Ford Nature Center. The cost is $12 R; 15 NR. The second person in tandem is half the price. Additional fees apply after the deadline.

Spring cleaning kayak

Help clean the shores and wetlands of Lake Newport on June 20 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Participants must have paddling skills. Age restrictions apply. Reserve a kayak or bring your own. Meet at the East Newport boat launch. Call Ford Nature Center for details.

Thursdays family farm tours

Tour includes playroom time, a stop in the barns and a tractor-wagon ride at MetorParks Farm on June 11, 18 and 25 from 10-11:30 a.m.

Weekend farm tours

Enjoy a guided tractor-wagon tour of the farm leaving approximately every half hour on June 14 from 1-4 p.m. Barns are open to visit with the animals. Donations will be accepted and there is a craft fee of $1.

Birding by trolley

Travel through Mill Creek MetroParks by trolley to find the best sports for birding. Start with coffee and some bird viewing at Ford Nature Center, then finish by visiting Mill Creek Wildlife Sanctuary on June 3 from 7:30-10:30 a.m. Register and pay in advance. MetroMutts: sunset farm hike

Hike all four beautiful habitats of the Mindy Henning Memorial Trail at MetroParks Farm-Bikeway Trailhead and watch the summer sunset on the farm with your furry friend. Local shelters will be on hand with adoptable dogs. This is a moderate 2.5 mile hike on June 19 from 6:30-8 p.m.

Academic scholarships for Cardinal Mooney to be awarded to top students

Cardinal Mooney High School will help further the education of top students from parochial feeder schools within the Diocese of Youngstown school system by awarding Academic Excellence Scholarships to those schools’ top performers. St. Christine’s in Youngstown, St. Nicholas in Struthers, St. Charles in Boardman and Holy Family in Poland are considered feeder schools for Cardinal Mooney. Two students at each of these schools will be offered $2,000 scholarships for the 2015-2016 school year. These scholarships are renewable each year of the students’ four-year education at Cardinal Mooney, contingent upon them maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.75 each academic year.

Chuck E. Cheese story time and library fundraiser

There will be a special story time at 10 a.m., before the store opens, at the Chuck E. Cheese in Boardman on June 24. This story time will take place on the fourth Wednesday of every month in 2015. Support your Mahoning County Public Libraries that day by showing your library card and receive 10 free tokens to play games. The library will receive 15 percent of the purchases made that day at Chuck E. Cheese. Support the Friends of PLYMC by donating your gently used and one read children’s books also that day to support children’s programming. Teens entering grades 7-12 can go to the Boardman library’s teen party as themselves, but then discover their inner superhero or villain with the help of the library’s DIY costume makerspace. There will also be a series of challenges designed to reveal your alter ego, and you’ll leave with a picture of your new self as a manga character. There will also be food. This event is for teens in grades 7-12 on June 17 at 6:30 p.m.

Third annual creative writing camp

Children entering grades 5-8 can join the Boardman library for the Creative Writing Camp from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. on June 22-26. Each two-hour session will be filled with writing prompts, writing games, group activities and lots of quiet time for writing. On Friday, parents are encouraged to attend a gala with each child reading an excerpt of their work. Registration is limited to the first 25 children. Every hero has a story

The Summer Discovery program for children will be ”every hero has a story” and will take place at the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. Children will have an opportunity to earn incentives by reading or completing activities or a combination of both. Children will receive a free ice cream cone from Dairy Queen and a Mahoning Valley Scrappers game voucher just for signing up. When they complete five activities, children get a choice of paperback books. On completing 10 activities, they receive an incentive and for children ages 3 and up, they will get a free admission to OH WOW! When they complete 15 activities, they will be into a drawing for a gift card. And children who complete 20 activities by July 25 will earn a chance to have breakfast with author David Catrow, creator of the Max Spaniel books, in July.

Ursuline Center hosts sumemr series of spirituality programs

The Ursuline Center is offering a Summer Spirituality Series of programs, beginning with classes on world religion taught by Sister Nancy Dawson. Dawson, executive director of The Ursuline Center and an instructor of World Religions classes at Youngstown State University, will teach three classes on world religions. Her classes are offered on June 1, 8 and 15 from either 10:30 a.m until 12 p.m. or 6:30-8 p.m. The first two classes will cover Judaism and Islam. The subject of the third class will be determined based on participants’ interest and the information presented in the first two sessions. Ursuline Center: summer series of spirituality

Chaney class of 1965 to have reunion

The Chaney High School Class of 1965 50th annual reunion will take place at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman on July 31. The cost, which includes dinner, is $40 per person. The class will also host a picnic on Aug. 1 at Slippery Rock Pavillion in Millcreek Park. The cost for the picnic is $10 per person. Semi-Sweethearts dance camp

Join the Boardman band for Spartan Sweethearts, a three-day dance camp filled with dance and music where girls in kindergarten through third grade can learn dance routines taught by the Spartan Sweethearts to the sounds of the Boardman Spartan Marching band, on June 29, 30 and July 1 from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the Boardman High School main hallway Those who participate in this camp may even have the opportunity to perform with the band. DSAV sponsers bicycle camp for individuals with disabilities

The Down Syndrome Association of the Valley is now accepting applications for a bicycle camp for persons with disabilities June 15-19 at Boardman Glenwood Middle School. This five-day camp is requiring riders to attend one 75-minute session per day, The cost is $75. To be eligible, riders must be at least 8-years-old, have a disability and be able to walk without an assistive device such as a walker or cane. Riders must be able to side-step quickly to both sides. Riders must have a minimum inseam measurement of 20 inches and weigh no more than 220 pounds. Log onto DSAV.org for an application to the iCan Bike program. Space is limited and registration deadline is May 30.

Safe Sitter classes set for this summer

Safe Sitter teaches boys and girls ages 11-13 how to be ideal babysitters. The two-day course covers basic first aid, rescue breathing, accident prevention, childcare tips, what to do if a child chokes and how and when to call for help. Neighborhood Ministries is sseeking churches to provide free meals

Neighborhood Ministries, a sponsor for the Summer Food Service Program, is seeking churches or organizations to join in providing free meals to children ages 18 and under who live in the Youngstown area. The meals are provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture through the Ohio Department of Education from June 8 – Aug. 21. Sailing Lessons at MCCTC

Sailing lessons for beginners are being offered at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center on June 2, 6 and 9. Saint Nicholas Church festival set for June

Saint Nicholas Church is having their 42nd annual festival June 17-21 at 764 Fifth Street, Struthers. Admission price is $2 and children 12 and under are free. The festival begins at 6 p.m.

Pink Ribbon Golf Classic set for July 13

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Youngstown Country Club on July 13. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The 18 hole scramble will be followed by lunch and a Chinese auction and raffle.

Simply Slavic call for vendors

The fifth annual Simply Slavic festival will be on June 20 from 12-11 p.m. on Federal Plaza East. Organizers are seeking authentically Slavic retail, craft, fine art and food vendors for its marketplace and food tents. Simply Slavic has vending space for 15 food vendors and 10 marketplace vendors who will provide a variety of Slavic merchandise and foods for patrons during the festival. Gamblers Anonymous

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). The Ursuline Center announces 2015 Guided Labyrinth Walk Schedule

The Ursuline Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, has announced its 2015 Guided Labyrinth Walk schedule. All persons of faith are invited to participate in these free events. Walks generally take 20-30 minutes. This year’s first guided walk is April 19 at 2 p.m. and offers an additional feature. The event starts with a presentation on the “Spirituality of Labyrinths” in The Ursuline Center, then moves outdoors for a walk celebrating the Earth. Friends Specialty at the Garden Caf in Mill Creek MetroParks Fellows Riverside Gardens has officially opened for business. The Garden Caf has been refreshed and newly updated and will offer an eclectic selection of teas, locally roasted coffee, a locally sourced lunch menu, desserts and other libations all served with a complimentary view of stunning Lake Glacier. The Caf is open to the public from Tuesday through Sunday during the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. for pastries, coffee and tea.
