Lincoln funeral train stopping at Painesville

PAINESVILLE — The Painesville Railroad Museum (aka, Painesville Depot), 475 Railroad St., will host the 2015 Lincoln Funeral Train Saturday and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Admission is $5 (free for children 13 and under), with a $10 maximum for families. For information, go to painesvillerailroadmuseum.org.

Visitors will be able to tour the full-size replica of the train that transported the body of President Abraham Lincoln from Washington, D.C., to Springfield, Ill., including the engine, tender and funeral car.

The Lincoln Funeral Train tour generally retraces the original route of the train, but this year, Painesville will be the furthest east it will travel.

On Feb. 16, 1861, the newly elected President Lincoln, on the way to his inauguration, stopped at the Painesville Station, where he spoke to a crowd of several thousand people.
