The Columbiana Area Chamber of Commerce invites the public to celebrate First Friday in downtown Columbiana from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday. The event features an opportunity to be entered into a drawing for a gift basket. Those interested can download a flier at www. columbianachamber.com.
Participants can receive a stamp on their flier indicating the number of shops and restaurants visited. At least 12 participating shop stamps are required to be eligible for the drawing.
Special events will include live music, tours and children’s activities. Artisans, artists or crafters who would like to participate by setting up a table should call the chamber at 330-482-3822.
Slots revenue up
HARRISBURG, PA.
The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board reported Wednesday that slot- machine revenue generated at casinos was $211,219,909 in May, or 0.18 percent more than a year ago when revenue was $210,830,677.
Medicare concerns

U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Howland, D-13th, joined 60 of his House colleagues in writing a letter to Speaker John Boehner and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi calling on them to ensure that the Trade Adjustment Assistance legislation is fully funded and does not use cuts to Medicare to pay for the TAA program.
“I am, and always have been, an ardent supporter of the Trade Adjustment Assistance program and firmly believe it must be fully funded – but cutting Medicare to pay for it is wrong for our seniors, wrong for our workers and wrong for the nation,” Ryan said in a statement.
Courtyard to open
CANFIELD
Courtyard by Marriott Youngstown Canfield is scheduled to open at 4173 Westford Place this month. The 110-room hotel will operate as a Marriott franchise, owned by Kennsington Hospitality LLC and managed by Radius Hospitality.
Reduced fees OK’d
COLUMBUS
The Ohio Senate gave its approval Wednesday to legislation reducing business- filing fees in the state.
HB 3 passed on a vote of 32-0 and will take effect 90 days after Gov. John Kasich adds his signature.
Among other provisions, the bill will reduce filing fees for businesses to $99 from $125. Certain business-name registrations will drop to $39 from $50.
Additional language will ensure access for companies in good standing with the state to OhioMeansJobs, the website that includes job postings and other business support.
Speakers recalled
NEW YORK
Apple said it is recalling its Beats Pill XL speakers after a customer reported getting burned when it overheated.
There were eight reports of the speaker’s battery overheating, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Wednesday.
Apple said customers can apply for a $325 refund on its website. They also can elect to receive Apple Store credit for the same amount. Apple, based in Cupertino, Calif., said it will send customers boxes for free to return the speakers.
