West Market Street at North Park Avenue and Mahoning Avenue, Mahoning at West Market and High streets, Mahoning at Monroe Street, and High at North Park and at Harmon will be closed at 6 p.m. today for the three-day African American Achievers Festival. The roads will reopen Monday.

Shot at a home

YOUNGSTOWN

Police are investigating after a city man was shot at a home in the 900 block of West Indianola Avenue late Tuesday.

Police were called to a South Meridian Road gas station in Austintown at about 10:15 p.m., where township police said they had a 35-year-old gunshot victim inside a car.

Capt. Brad Blackburn, chief of detectives, said after the man was shot, his girlfriend drove him to Austintown for some reason, where they contacted city police.

The victim was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital to be treated for gunshot wounds to his arm and chest.

Powdered alcohol ban

Lawmakers gave their final approval Wednesday to legislation banning the sale of powdered alcohol and powdered caffeine in the state, sending the law changes to Gov. John Kasich for his expected signature.

The 26-5 vote came after one Republican member voiced his objections, saying a ban is premature, and lawmakers should instead consider regulating its sale.

The bill includes exceptions for pills that contain up to 250 milligrams of caffeine or coffee, tea and other products that contain caffeine combined with other ingredients.

Burglary reported

Township police continue investigating a reported burglary at a Westview Drive home. A victim reported to police Monday that sometime that day someone entered her family’s house and stole $270 in cash and a debit card. Police do not know how the suspect gained entry to the house.

Day Camp discount

Early-bird discount registration for Boardman Park’s Adventure Day Camp will end Monday.

Prices will increase by $10 per week after the early-bird deadline passes. Discounts also are available for Boardman residents, multiweek participants and multisibling registrations.

The camp, which is for children who have completed kindergarten and up to 12 years old, will run from June 15 to Aug. 14. Camp hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Woman damages door

A Struthers woman faces a felony burglary charge after township police say she caused damage to an apartment door belonging to the father of her child.

Octavia Mayhew, 27, of Elm Street, was arrested Tuesday. She is charged with burglary, criminal damage and criminal trespass.

The victim told police that Mayhew came to his Wolosyn Circle apartment May 4, where she reportedly punched and kicked a hole into the door. She had already been issued a criminal trespass warning after a December 2014 arrest for domestic violence and aggravated trespass, according to a police report and court records.

Mayhew is scheduled to be in Mahoning County Area Court here July 7 for a preliminary hearing.

Lifelong Learning

The Mahoning Valley Lifelong Learning Institute will break ground at 10:30 a.m. today for the Gelhaar Center in the gathering room at Park Vista, Fifth Avenue. The Gelhaar Center is the result of a successful $1 million campaign for program endowment and capital improvements for the Mahoning Valley Lifelong Learning Institute, which was founded and operated by Park Vista of Youngstown.

Adventure Day

Fellows Riverside Gardens, 123 McKinley Ave., will host Garden Adventure Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The free event will be in the Family Garden, which has a Peter Pan theme this year. Activities will include “Captain Hook’s obstacle course” and a drum circle with organizations such as the Green Team and the Mahoning Valley Dahlia Society.
