Mahoning, Trumbull counties join forces to tackle pothole problem

CANFIELD

The Mahoning and Trumbull county engineers’ offices will jointly purchase a $230,000 road grinder to help repair roads in both counties.

County Engineers Patrick Ginnetti and Randy Smith, respectively, appeared before the Mahoning County commissioners Wednesday to announce the joint effort.

“It’s a step forward for us to be a little more aggressive and proactive at trying to tackle this pothole problem that we have,” Ginnetti said.

“By purchasing this piece of equipment together, it’s going to be less of a burden on the two counties,” he added.

“This is a start in addressing the 2016 pothole problems in 2015. We both have those same challenges, and I think this will give both of our counties an opportunity to work together, and it’s to the benefit of the residents,” Smith said.

The machine will grind sections of roads and lay down contiguous patches, instead of having workers manually shovel asphalt into one pothole after another, explained Mahoning County Commissioner David Ditzler.

“It will grind off the section, tack it, put our asphalt down and roll it. We’ll have a much better repair,” he added.
