Home invaders get six-year prison terms
YOUNGSTOWN
Two home invaders are going to prison for six years.
Dwaylyn Nadal, 29, of Youngstown, and Derek Royal, 24, of Campbell, were sentenced Monday by Judge Maureen A. Sweeney of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.
The defendants pleaded guilty last week to aggravated burglary and aggravated robbery after being accused of forcing their way into a residence in the 100 block of South Schenley Avenue on the city’s West Side at 1:10 a.m. last Aug. 8.
Sentencing will be at a later date for a third defendant, Sterling Owens, 24, of Austintown, who pleaded guilty to the same charges in this case last week.
Police found one of the home’s occupants on the roof, saying there were men inside with guns.
As police surrounded the house, an officer saw a back door slightly ajar and heard someone say police were present and close the door, police reports said.
Another person tried to leave through a window, but saw police and pulled back inside.
Two men left through the back door and told police three men were inside with guns.
When police announced they had a dog, Owens surrendered.
Royal was found in the kitchen, and Nadal in the dining room.
Police found a handgun under a couch cushion and a revolver behind the china closet where Nadal was standing.
The man on the roof told police he was watching TV and fled to the roof after twice hearing someone ask: “Where is the weed?”
Nadal and Royal will be on five years’ parole after prison.
Their sentences can’t be appealed because they were agreed upon by the prosecution and defense and adopted by the judge.
