Iowa St. coach Hoiberg closes in on Bulls job

AMES, Iowa

Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg boarded a flight to Chicago on Monday to meet with the Bulls about their coaching vacancy, and the NBA team then said it would have a major announcement on Tuesday.

Hours before the Bulls sent out their release, Hoiberg told reporters at the airport in Ames, Iowa, that he had meetings set for Monday night but no deal had been finalized.

Hoiberg had long been rumored as the replacement for Tom Thibodeau, who was fired last week after five seasons in Chicago.

Hoiberg is 115-56 with the Cyclones, including four straight NCAA Tournament appearances and back-to-back Big 12 tournament titles.

IOC cites challenges for Almaty, Beijing bids

LONDON

The IOC has highlighted serious challenges facing the two bids for the 2022 Winter Olympics, including pointed concerns over Beijing’s air pollution and lack of natural snow and Almaty’s budget risks and limited experience in hosting major events.

The International Olympic Committee issued a 136-page report Monday that assessed the bids from the Chinese capital and the Kazakh city, citing strengths and weaknesses of both candidacies.

The report by the IOC evaluation commission did not rank or grade the bids or make direct comparisons.

Almaty was portrayed favorably for its winter setting, natural snow and compact layout. Beijing was praised for its high-quality venues, reliability and experience from hosting the 2008 Summer Games.

While the report did not include any major surprises, it did not hold back in listing drawbacks for Beijing, widely considered the favorite.

Devils to hire Hynes as head coach

NEWARK, N.J.

New Jersey general manager Ray Shero has reached into his ties with the Pittsburgh Penguins to pick the Devils’ next head coach, John Hynes.

Shero has chosen the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton coach to run the once-proud team that has failed to make the playoffs the past three seasons.

The 40-year-old Hynes has coached the Penguins’ AHL farm team for the past five seasons, making the playoffs each year. He was the AHL’s coach of the year in 2010-11.

Dan Bylsma, who recently was hired to be the Buffalo Sabres coach, is a former Wilkes Barre/Scranton coach who led the Penguins to a Stanley Cup title.

Scott to use Williams as summer caddie

NASSAU, Bahamas

Adam Scott has split with his new caddie and for now is going back to his old one — Steve Williams.

Scott says he persuaded Williams to join him for the U.S. Open, British Open, Bridgestone Invitational and PGA Championship.

Scott tied for fourth at Doral and has been struggling since. He has missed two cuts and has not finished better than a tie for 24th. That was at the Colonial, and he then fired caddie Mike Kerr.

Scott says he had to talk Williams out of retirement for the next three months. They last worked together at the Tour Championship last year.
