A free seminar, “Healthy Living: 10 Ways to Improve and Keep Your Health,” is offered at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Health Treasures Food Store, 40 W. Broad St.

The seminar, part of the store’s 20-year anniversary celebration, will be presented by Dr. Ted Suzelis. The anniversary celebration also features the grand opening of the gluten-free bakery and cafe Remedy Cafe.

Addressing suicide

BOARDMAN

The Trumbull County Mental Health & Recovery Board is offering a workshop, “The Inter-connectedness between Substance Abuse Disorders and Suicide,” from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. June 9 at The Embassy, 5030 Youngstown-Poland Road. The workshop is approved for 4.5 continuing education units for counselors, social workers and chemical dependency professionals.

Presenters include Capt. Jeffrey Coady, PsyD, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Region 5 administrator; Dr. Theodore Parran, addictionologist; and Will Heininger, program coordinator for “Athletes Connected,” University of Michigan’s Depression Center.

Hospice training

POLAND

Hospice of the Valley is offering training sessions for new companion volunteers to visit hospice patients in Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties. Sessions from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays start today and run to July 7 at Hospice House, 9803 Sharrott Road, Poland.

During the training program, volunteers will learn what Hospice of the Valley’s team of doctors, nurses, social workers and chaplains do for patients and their families and how they fit into that team.

Hospice volunteers serve in a variety of ways including companions for hospice patients at home or in nursing homes as well as helping at the Hospice House inpatient facility. They also provide respite services to family members.

Volunteer assignments are made close to the volunteer’s home. All volunteers must wait one year after the loss of a loved one before they can become a volunteer.

‘Healthy Eating’

Mercy Health Youngs-town, formerly Humility of Mary Health Partners, will present a workshop, “Healthy Eating for You: Portion Control,” from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Warren Hospital, 667 Eastland Ave.

Immunizations

The Niles City Health Department, 34 W. State St., is offering immunization clinics for children from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday and June 17.

No appointment is needed, and no one will be refused service because of inability to pay.

Children should be feeling well with no illness, fever or rash. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
