Police arrested three people, including a mother of four, on charges they had heroin over the weekend.
About 4:30 p.m. Sunday, officers writing someone a citation for driving under suspension in a parking lot noticed a car on Indianola Avenue stopped at the red light on Market Street, and the car stayed there as the light ran for two cycles. The officers also noticed it appeared someone was slumped over the steering wheel, so they walked over to investigate.
Inside, asleep behind the wheel, they found Dana Mastroianni, 33, of New Castle, Pa., and on her lap was a bag of suspected heroin and a spoon, reports said. Reports said the car was in drive, and Mastroianni’s foot was on the brake. When officers managed to wake her up, she swept the items off her lap, reports said.
Police searched the car, and in the ashtray, they found another bag of suspected heroin, five strips of suboxone and $301 in cash.
Mastroianni was arraigned Monday before Judge Elizabeth Kobly in municipal court on charges of possession of heroin, possession of drugs, possession of drug-abuse instruments and possession of drug paraphernalia. Her bond was set at $5,000.
On Saturday, an officer checking complaints of drug activity at the McDonald’s restaurant in the 2500 block of Market Street about 4:30 p.m. saw two people in a car. As he drove closer to them, one of them threw something down in the car, reports said.
Reports said the driver, Lori Reese, 38, and John Reeder, 30, both of Niles, were acting very nervous. When asked if they had anything illegal, Reese pulled out a syringe full of suspected heroin, reports said. Another loaded syringe was found near where Reeder was sitting, reports said. Reeder also had $403 in cash on her, reports said.
Reeder and Reese were both arraigned on charges of possession of heroin and possession of drug-abuse instruments. Judge Kobly set each of their bonds at $10,000.
Reese also told the judge during her arraignment when asking for a court-appointed attorney that she has four children.
All three have preliminary hearings set for Monday.
