YOUNGSTOWN

Several downtown streets are closed because of the Greater Youngstown Italian Festival.

The streets will reopen at 5 a.m. Monday. They were closed at 3 a.m. Wednesday.

Closed are Federal Street from Phelps Street to South Avenue/Commerce Street as well as Boardman to Commerce streets on Federal, Market, Champion and Walnut streets.

The festival is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Sunday, and from 2 to 11 p.m. Saturday.

Fire damages home

YOUNGSTOWN

Reports said firefighters found a six children and their mother sleeping about 10:05 a.m. Tuesday inside their 479 Clearmount Ave. home as a fire burned above them.

Reports said when crews arrived they kicked in the door and found the family asleep on the first floor. Reports said the family was roused from the home by firefighters who then advanced to a second-floor bedroom and extinguished a fire there. Damage is listed at $500. The cause is listed as unintentional, and reports said firefighters are investigating if the blaze was started by one of the children playing with matches.

Sunglasses stolen

AUSTINTOWN

Several pairs of brand-name sunglasses were taken from a township business. Optical Solutions Vision Center, 6006 Mahoning Ave., reported Tuesday that a male and female removed frames from the shelves between 4:30 and 4:45 p.m. July 20. According to a police report, the pair took $2,250 worth of sunglasses that were RayBan, Oakley, Vogue, Jimmy Crystal New York, Coach and Dolce brands. Surveillance footage was captured of the two in the store.

In a separate incident in late September, customers within the store took $1,800 worth of merchandise in a 15-minute window.

Man faces charges

GIRARD

Police arrested Thomas Fisher, 32, of Warren at a Burger King parking lot on South State Street on Tuesday on charges of drug abuse and driving under suspension. A police report states that Fisher had a marijuana blunt, 40 oxycodone pills and four unknown pills in his vehicle. Fisher told police he bought drugs to resell in order to support his family, the report states. Fisher entered a plea of not guilty for the driving-under- suspension charge at his arraignment Wednesday in Girard Municipal Court. His pretrial hearing is next Wednesday in Girard Municipal Court.

Voting locations

CANFIELD

Due to precinct cuts, some city voters have a different voting location. City residents have before them a half-percent income-tax increase on the Tuesday special-election ballot. Mahoning County Board of Elections officials said since the city’s precincts were cut from 10 to eight, one of the lost precinct’s voting location has changed. Six of the eight precincts – Precincts 3 through 8 – will be at St. Michael Church, 281 Glenview Road, and the other two, Precincts 1 and 2, will be at the Mill Creek MetroParks Farm, 7574 Columbiana-Canfield Road. Precinct 10 was absorbed into 7, changing its voting location, while Precinct 9 was absorbed but will continue to vote at the farm.
