Poll: Kasic picks up points but still trails Trump

COLUMBUS — Gov. John Kasich has picked up a few percentage points in a new poll of registered voters considering candidates in the 2016 presidential field.

But he and 15-plus other candidates trailed billionaire Donald Trump among GOP hopefuls.

Trump also topped the list of candidates that voters said they wouldn't support. The results were included in a Quinnipiac University Polling Institute survey released Thursday.

"They love him and they hate him," Tim Malloy, assistant director of the poll, said in a released statement concerning Trump. "Donald Trump triumphs on the stump so far, but do voters really want him? Maybe not so much."

Connecticut-based Quinnipiac regularly gauges the opinions of voters in Ohio and other swing states on candidates and issues. It questioned 1,644 registered voters nationally over the last week on potential 2016 presidential match-ups. The results have a margin of error of about 4 percentage points.

Kasich more than doubled his support among voters in the latest poll, with 5 percent of those questioned siding with his candidacy in the Republican field. That's up from 2 percent in Quinnipiac polls over the past year and a half.

Trump received 20 percent support, up from 5 percent in a May poll. Thirty percent of those polled also said there was "no way" they would support Trump for president.
