YOUNGSTOWN
A man who was found shot to death Sunday night on a South Side street had his probation from juvenile court expire less than 48 hours earlier.
The body of Jarrel Brown, 18, of East LaClede Avenue, was found about 10:15 p.m. Sunday at West Indianola Avenue and Market Street. His death is the city’s 13th homicide of 2015.
Officers were called to the intersection by a passer-by who spotted a man lying on his back in the street, said Lt. Doug Bobovnyik of the department’s detective bureau. By the time officers arrived, an ambulance crew had checked the man and he had no pulse, reports said.
Bobovnyik said Market Street is a heavily traveled road and Brown probably was not there long before someone called 911.
“It was probably right after he was put there,” Bobovnyik said of the person who called 911.
Bobovnyik said investigators have video from businesses around where Brown was found, from right before police were called. He also said he thinks Brown was shot somewhere in the area, then walked to the intersection and collapsed there.
Bobovnyik said police also have several “persons of interest” in the case.
Although Brown has no adult criminal record, he was on probation from Mahoning County Juvenile Court for a charge of receiving stolen property from earlier this year. That probation expired Friday.
Also in juvenile court, Brown had two theft offenses in 2011, and in 2012 he had charges of aggravated menacing, burglary and carrying a concealed weapon, according to court records.
At this point in 2014, Youngstown had five homicides for the year. The city had a total of 19 homicides in 2014.
In a related matter late Monday, police arrested two people in connection with the pistol-whipping of a man on Princeton Avenue.
Police said they have charged Jawuan Brown, 21, of Youngstown with felonious assault and Jalesa Brown, 19, of Austintown with complicity to felonious assault.
Officers said both Jalesa and Jawuan Brown are siblings of Jarrell Brown.
The pair believed that the man who was pistol-whipped had something to do with their brother’s death, police said. Jalesa and Jawaun Brown will be arraigned today in Youngstown Municipal Court.
