Campbell announces new athletic director
Campbell
Campbell City School District has named Ron Aulet as its new athletic director, effective July 1.
Aulet is no stranger to the area, graduating high school from Warren JFK. He played baseball for the Astro Falcons and played both college baseball and basketball at Hiram College. He earned a Bachelor’s in management and Master’s from Kent State University in Sports Administration.
“I look forward working closely with the staff, students and community members,” Aulet said. “ I understand the pride of the community and the history of success. It is exciting to be part of this program where we will continue the tradition”
Aulet has spent the last 15 years living in Kansas with his wife and two children where he was first employed at the University of Kansas and later became the associate athletic director at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Hughes earns OHSAA scholarship money
COLUMBUS
The Ohio High School Athletic Association will hand out $54,200 in college scholarships to 48 recent high school graduates following selections made by each of the OHSAA’s six District Athletic Boards. Western Reserve’s Aleah Hughes is one of the recipients this year.
The OHSAA’s annual college scholarship program is now in its 23rd year. Of the 48 honorees, 41 will receive $1,000 awards, including six (one from each district) who will receive an OHSAA Minority Scholarship. The highest ranking scholarship recipient in each district will receive a $2,000 OHSAA Spirit of Sport scholarship (a tie in one district resulted in both graduates receiving $1,600).
“In addition to being excellent students and athletes, these 48 young people have been leaders in their schools and in their communities,” said OHSAA Commissioner Dr. Dan Ross. “They truly represent what it means to be a student-athlete. Their futures are very bright and their families, teachers and coaches are to be commended for helping guide them to great high school careers and now on to college. The OHSAA is very proud of all of them.”
Cardinals will have female coach at camp
TEMPE, Ariz.
The Arizona Cardinals have hired Jen Welter to coach inside linebackers through their upcoming training camp and preseason.
The Cardinals say Welter is believed to be the first woman to hold a coaching position of any kind in the NFL. Welter played running back and special teams in 2014 for the Texas Revolution of the Indoor Football League, becoming the first woman to hold a non-kicking position for a men’s professional sports league.
She coached linebackers and special teams for the Revolution last season, becoming the first woman to coach in a men’s pro football league.
Welter played linebacker for more than 14 seasons with the Dallas Diamonds of the Women’s Football Alliance and holds a master’s degree in sports psychology.
Seau family won’t disrupt HOF ceremony
CANTON
The family of the late Junior Seau will not disrupt the Hall of Fame ceremonies on Aug. 8 despite its disagreement with a policy preventing live remarks during a posthumous induction.
Steve Strauss, legal counsel to the Seaus and partner at Cooley LLP, says in an email Monday night that the family “does not want this issue to become a distraction to Junior’s accomplishments and legacy or those of the other inductees.”
Seau, who took his own life in 2012, will be saluted with a video presentation in which his daughter, Sydney, will speak. But Hall policy does not allow for live speeches during a posthumous induction.
Sydney Seau admitted last week she was upset with not being allowed to give a speech, but Strauss says, “The Seau family looks forward to celebrating Junior’s extraordinary accomplishments at the Hall of Fame.“
