Giant Eagle store offers hiring bonus
INDIANAPOLIS
The competition for workers in the central Indiana job market has grown so intense that one retailer is offering hiring bonuses.
Pittsburgh-based grocer Giant Eagle is offering $400 bonuses if the 500 workers it’s hiring for its new Carmel store stay on the job for 90 days. Giant Eagle regional vice president Mike Maraldo tells The Indianapolis Star there’s a lot of competition right now among retailers in the Indianapolis area.
In March, total employment in the Indianapolis metropolitan area topped 1 million for the first time. It has climbed by 25,000 jobs since then, even as the jobless rate fell to 4.5 percent in May from 5.7 percent a year earlier. A rate under 5 percent is considered full employment.
Husband suspected of decapitating wife
PHOENIX
A woman was found decapitated along with two dogs in a blood-soaked Phoenix apartment, and police said Sunday they suspect her husband, who was found naked and severely wounded, in the grisly attack.
Police responded Saturday morning after being tipped off by a neighbor, who said the man answered his front door nude with a severed left forearm, a missing eye and cuts on his chest. The 43-year-old suspect hasn’t been identified, but police say he will be charged in the slaying after he recovers from his wounds, which they believe were self-inflicted.
The victim, 49-year-old Trina Heisch, and dogs were discovered in a bedroom closet, police spokesman Trent Crump said.
The couple have a history of mental illness, domestic violence and drug abuse, he said. Family members told investigators the couple met at a mental health facility.
Mexico search for missing students turns up 129 bodies
MEXICO CITY
Mexico’s attorney general says authorities have found at least 60 mass graves with 129 bodies in the southern city of Iguala since the disappearance of 43 college students there last September, a case in which the government says the youths were killed and incinerated.
The attorney general’s office says the number of bodies found from October to May could be more, because it is counting only those instances in which its mass-grave specialists get involved.
Iguala is a municipality of 120,000 people 160 miles south of Mexico City. A confrontation between students and police resulted in six deaths and the disappearance of 43 students. The search for the students turned up many mass graves
Turkey calls for NATO meeting
ANKARA, Turkey
Turkey on Sunday called for a meeting of its NATO allies to discuss threats to its security and its airstrikes targeting Islamic State militants in Syria and Kurdish rebels in Iraq.
The move came as Turkey’s state-run media reported that Turkish F-16 jets again took off from the country’s southeastern Diyarbakir air base to hit Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK targets across the border in northern Iraq.
NATO announced that its decision-making body, the North Atlantic Council, will convene Tuesday after Ankara invoked the alliance’s Article 4, which allows member states to request a meeting if they feel their territorial integrity or security is under threat.
