Family members of a man fatally shot by a University of Cincinnati police officer who stopped him because of a missing license plate are pressing for release of video from the traffic stop.

Supporters of 43-year-old Samuel Dubose gathered Sunday afternoon at the site where he was shot for a vigil, and a march was also planned. About 20 people, including Dubose relatives, protested last Thursday outside Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters’ office.

The Associated Press and other media sued the prosecutor Friday, alleging a violation of Ohio’s public records laws. They want the Ohio Supreme Court to order the video released.

Dubose’s death comes amid months of national scrutiny of police dealings with African-Americans, especially those killed by officers.

Dubose was black. The officer is white. Authorities haven’t indicated whether race is a part of the investigation.

The prosecutor has refused to release body-camera footage until his investigation is completed.

“We need time to look at everything and do a complete investigation so that the community is satisfied that we did a thorough job,” Deters said in a statement.

Deters also said that the grand jury hasn’t seen the video and he didn’t want to taint the jury process.
