City schools will be headed by new commission by October

YOUNGSTOWN — By October, a new city school district academic distress commission will be in place and that panel will approve a new improvement plan by May 2016.

Jennifer Felker, a representative of the Ohio Department of Education, talked about the timelines of a new law that will allow a CEO to operate the city schools during a commission meeting this afternoon.

The Rev. Kenneth Simon, a commission member, questioned the legality of the process to approve the law.

Mr. Simon also believes that giving one person so much power is a bad idea.

He believes the failure of the district is the goal.

"I'm just appalled," Mr. Simon said.
