New animatronic Smokey the Bear to greet Ohio State Fair visitors

COLUMBUS

A new animatronic Smokey Bear with arms and a head and mouth that move will greet visitors at this year’s Ohio State Fair.

The fire prevention icon has greeted visitors by name at the fair since 1959. The state’s Department of Natural Resources sought funding last year to replace the former 14 1/2-foot figure that state officials said was in poor condition after decades of use.

Officials say the new bear will continue its role as a teaching tool on how to prevent wildfires. It will greet visiting children daily from July 29 through Aug. 9.

A Smokey Bear hot air balloon also will fly above the fairgrounds each morning, weather permitting.
