Health secretary announces $100M in substance abuse money

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. (AP) — U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell has announced $100 million in additional money for substance abuse treatment.

Burwell made the announcement Saturday at the National Governors Association summer meeting at The Greenbrier resort in West Virginia.

A news release says the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration will award up to $11 million a year for 11 states for medication-assisted treatment, with a focus on addressing opioid use.

The 11 grants will provide up to $33 million over three years. The release did not name the states.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services also is introducing a project that lets states receive federal funding to reimburse substance abuse treatment.

Burwell is a Hinton, West Virginia native.
