ESPN takes Cowherd off air after comments
NEW YORK
ESPN says radio host Colin Cowherd won’t be on the air again before leaving the network in the wake of his remarks about major league baseball players from the Dominican Republic.
The network said Friday that “Colin will no longer appear on ESPN.” The statement said Cowherd’s comments “do not reflect the values of ESPN or our employees.”
Cowherd said Thursday that he didn’t believe baseball was complex, saying a third of the sport was from the Dominican Republic, which had “not been known, in my lifetime, as having, you know, world-class academic abilities.”
ESPN said earlier this month that Cowherd was leaving the network amid reports he’s going to Fox Sports 1. Cowherd said Friday that he didn’t intend to offend anyone with his remarks.
“I realize my choice of words was poor and not reflective of who I am. I am sorry,” he said.
Major League Baseball and its players’ union issued statements Friday calling Cowherd’s comments “offensive.”
Indians ‘not motivated’ to trade any young SP
CLEVELAND
Indians general manager Chris Antonetti says he has “no motivation” to trade any young starting pitchers.
With a week left before the trading deadline, Antonetti said Friday the club has received numerous calls from teams interested in Cleveland’s starters. The Indians have one of baseball’s best young staffs and Corey Kluber, Carlos Carrasco, Trevor Bauer, Danny Salazar and Cody Anderson are under the team’s control for several years.
Cleveland remains in the AL wild-card race despite an inconsistent offense, and Antonetti remains confident the club’s current lineup can get hot and string together some wins. As far as making a deal, Antonetti said the Indians are “open to a lot of different things,” but the club is not interested in adding players just for the balance of this season.
The Indians also recalled slugger Jesus Aguilar from Triple-A Columbus. To make room for Aguilar, the Indians optioned left-hander Kyle Crockett to Columbus.
Pitt WR Boyd sentenced to probation for DUI
Pittsburgh wide receiver Tyler Boyd entered a first-time offenders program Friday following his arrest for driving under the influence last month.
Allegheny County Common Pleas judge Robert Gallo also ordered Boyd’s driver’s license suspended for 90 days and required Boyd to complete a safe driving program. Boyd can ask Gallo to expunge the DUI charge against him if Boyd successfully completes the programs and pays court costs.
Boyd, an All-ACC first-team selection in 2014, was pulled over in the early hours of June 12 in Jefferson Hills, about 30 minutes south of Pittsburgh. Boyd told police he had two shots of alcohol.
Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi suspended Boyd from team activities for a month. Boyd, who is from Clairton, rejoined the Panthers last week.
