Pirates add Ramirez from Brewers

PITTSBURGH

Aramis Ramirez is headed back to the Pittsburgh Pirates after they acquired the veteran third baseman from the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Pirates got Ramirez on Thursday for minor league pitcher Yhonathan Barrios. The trade came 12 years to the day after the Pirates sent Ramirez to the Chicago Cubs. The 37-year-old Ramirez, a three-time All-Star, is hitting .247 with 11 home runs and 42 RBIs in what he says is his final season.

The contending Pirates, who will also receive cash considerations in the trade, were in need of infield help with regular third baseman Josh Harrison and shortstop Jordy Mercer both out at least another month with injuries. Pittsburgh began Thursday trailing St. Louis by six games in the NL Central.

Ramirez began his major league career with Pittsburgh, hitting .263 with 76 home runs in six seasons with the Pirates.

Indians’ lefty Hagadone has elbow surgery

CLEVELAND

Cleveland Indians pitcher Nick Hagadone has undergone surgery on his left elbow and is expected to miss six to nine months.

Hagadone, who had Tommy John surgery in 2008 while pitching in the minors, had Thursday’s surgery performed by Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Florida. Andrews said he repaired a fracture of the left medial epicondyle of the elbow in the area where the original surgery was performed.

Hagadone was 0-1 with a 4.28 ERA in 36 relief appearances. The left-hander was placed on the 15-day disabled list on July 8 with a lower back strain. He began a minor league assignment on July 15, but felt pain in his elbow after facing one batter.

OSU’s Braxton Miller makes switch to WR

The idea of switching to wide receiver first came to Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller in April, when he discussed it with strength coach Mickey Marotti.

In May, he brought up the possibility to coach Urban Meyer and the two began watching film of star wide receivers together. Miller’s fallback plan has become a reality, as he told SI.com on Thursday night that he plans to start the 2015 season playing H-Back—a hybrid receiver position—for the Buckeyes.

“For the most part, it’s going to be H-Back and punt return,” Miller said in a phone interview on Thursday night. “This is the smarter thing for right now, God blessed me with a lot of talent and different opportunities. I’m going to have fun with that and still score a lot of touchdowns and help the team out and be dominant at that.”

DE Nick Bosa commits to Ohio State

Defensive end Nick Bosa, of St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Thursday committed to play football for defending national champion Ohio State.

The 6-4, 265-pound five-star athlete said he made the decision to play for the Buckeyes for himself. He added the fact his brother Joey Bosa, who plays for Ohio State, had little impact on where he wanted to attend after Aquinas.

“The coaches at Ohio State are really good people,” Bosa said. “They really showed they cared about me. I’m definitely glad this is over before the start of the high school season.”

Bosa, the son of former Miami Dolphins defensive lineman John Bosa, finished his junior year with 56 tackles, 39.5 for a loss, and five sacks.
