Emerging technologies liaison introduces 3-D printing

The Austintown library hosted 3-D Printing: An Introduction, a class explaining the importance and function of 3-D printing, on June 23.
Wayne Bartholomew, emerging technologies and technical training liaison for the library, instructed the class, bringing with him the library’s very own 3-D printer. He joked about his lengthy title, saying he is basically just the computer guy.
Unfortunately, the printer was malfunctioning that day, so Bartholomew had to put together videos of it functioning on other occasions for demonstration.
“It’s unfortunate, but, with all technology, these things happen,” Bartholomew said.
Bartholomew said this class was really just informational, the first step in getting people familiar with the printer and its various capabilities. He explained the specs of the printer and gave numerous examples of ways 3-D printers are being used both in the library and in everyday life.
“It’s nice to feel the energy and the excitement in the room,” Bartholomew said. “I like to see the looks on some of our customers faces when they really get into it and realize this is something they can come here and do.”
Linda Kucalaba, another library employee, attended the class, learning for the first time about the art of 3-D printing.
“We do some really exciting programs,” Kucalaba said. “This 3-D printer is very new in technology.”
On August 11 the Austintown library will host another 3-D Printing, but this time it will be more hands-on, teaching students about design and everyday usage of this technology.
