Ignition-switch fund adds 3 more injuries

DETROIT

General Motors’ faulty ignition switches were responsible for at least 124 deaths and 269 injuries, according to a fund set up to compensate victims.

The fund, administered by Atty. Kenneth Feinberg, updated the totals Monday. The death toll didn’t grow from the previous week, but there were three additional injuries.

Victims’ families are being offered compensation of at least $1 million each.

The fund has finished processing the 4,342 claims it received by the Jan. 31 deadline. Of those, 84 percent – or 3,664 – were deemed ineligible. Feinberg is waiting for additional documentation for 285 claims.

Fund spokeswoman Camille Biros says 319 compensation offers have been made so far, and 227 have been accepted. Six have been rejected.

GM recalled 2.6 million Chevrolet Cobalts and other small cars last year but acknowledged it knew about the ignition-switch problems for more than a decade.

Gas prices drop slightly in Ohio

COLUMBUS

Gas prices for motorists in Ohio start the week a bit lower than they have in recent weeks.

The average for a gallon of regular gas in the state was about $2.63 in Monday’s survey from auto club AAA, the Oil Price Information Service and WEX Inc. That’s down 12 cents compared with last week and compared with a month ago.

The national average was $2.76 on Monday, a penny cheaper than a week earlier.

Gas prices have remained well below the average from a year ago, when a gallon cost about $3.50. Analysts have predicted prices will continue to drop as summer gives way to fall.
