Trackside party at W.Va. Derby

CHESTER, W.VA.

Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack and Resort is making the 46th running of the West Virginia Derby on Aug. 1 a family affair with its third annual Third Turn Party from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., featuring entertainment, food and games leading up to and during the races.

The Third Turn Party will be located by the third turn of the racetrack and is free to the public. A shuttle service will transport guests to and from the casino starting at 12 p.m. until the end of racing. Highlights include games and contests, including a Sharpshooter Challenge, a car and truck show, and corn hole; a DJ; food concessions and giveaways; and a visit by Andy Plattner, author of “Offerings of a Rust Belt Jockey.”

In line with derby tradition, guests should wear their best hats to participate in the West Virginia Derby Hat Contest. Between noon and 5 p.m., a mobile photographer will be driving from Third Turn to trackside to take pictures of contestants. The photos will be entered into a Facebook contest the following week. The winner will receive a complimentary hotel room night and a $150 Mountaineer Casino gift card (must be 21).
