Leavittsburg man who shot cousin indicted on involuntary manslaughter

WARREN

Thomas A. Catalde Jr., who killed his cousin May 9 by shooting him in the face with a shotgun that he said he thought was unloaded, is indicted on charges of reckless homicide, involuntary manslaughter and using weapons while intoxicated.

Catalde, 28, of Ruth Avenue, Leavittsburg, told police he shot Jesse Hayes, 15, of Parma, in the face with a shotgun he had recently purchased because he didn’t know it was loaded and “was just screwing around,” according to Warren Township police.

The shooting happened at the house where Catalde lived on Ruth Avenue. Catalde told police he had been drinking before the shooting but he was not intoxicated. Hayes was visiting his relatives at the time.

Judge Terry Ivanchak sentenced Catalde to 45 days in the Trumbull County jail May 29 as punishment for a probation violation resulting from the Hayes shooting.

If convicted of either reckless homicide or involuntary manslaughter, Catalde could get several years in prison.

Also indicted Tuesday was Alexandria S. Fetterolf, 27, of Ridge Road in Newton Falls, on a charge of failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer.

Fetterolf led police on a 26-minute chase covering 19 miles June 1. Police said they responded to the parking lot of the Mahoning Avenue Giant Eagle for someone who had overdosed on drugs in a vehicle.

When the officer got there, Fetterolf started backing up toward him, then continued north on Mahoning through Warren and Champion, then through Warren again and finally getting her car stuck in a yard on Mistletoe Road just off of North Road in Niles.
