Service Director Dan Livingston said the city selected six streets to resurface under its 2015 resurfacing program because the streets were “the worst of the worst.”

Beginning in mid-August, the city will resurface Caroline Avenue, between West Park Avenue and Wheeler Avenue; Stewart Avenue, between West Park and West Liberty Street; Hall Avenue, from West Liberty to Hubbard Elementary School; Elmwood Drive, between Moore Street and Jerry Drive; Oriole Drive, between Melody Lane and Meadowbrook Drive; and Clingan Avenue, between Grandview Avenue and Viola Avenue.

The project’s estimated cost is $227,357. The city initially proposed 13 streets to be resurfaced, but the estimated $356,991 cost for fixing all of them was too high, Livingston said.

Council passed legislation to accept a bid from R.T. Vernal Paving and Excavating of North Lima for the resurfacing of the six streets at Monday night’s meeting. Livingston said the resurfacing will take about a week to complete.

Additionally, Safety Director Louis Carsone announced the police department is in the process of acquiring a new police vehicle for about $35,000.

The sport utility vehicle, a 2016 Ford Explorer, should arrive around December, Carsone said. The department, which has a fleet of about a dozen cars, will sell one of its old cruisers and replace it with the new one.
