Downtown walking tour

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown CityScape will host a walking tour of downtown Youngstown. Participants will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Civil War Soldiers Monument in Central Square.

Plans for buildings, businesses, projects and events will be discussed as attendees walk the length of Federal Street. The first 30 attendees will receive a coupon to Joe Maxx Coffee.

The walk coincides with the first night of Youngstown’s Mount Carmel Italian Festival at 343 Via Mount Carmel Ave. The event is free, but reservations are encouraged by emailing info@youngstowncityscape.com or calling 330-742-4040.

Gathering signatures

COLUMBUS

The group behind a proposed constitutional amendment to legalize marijuana use in Ohio has until July 30 to gather nearly 30,000 more signatures, after its initial petition submission fell short of the requirement to qualify for the November ballot.

Local elections officials validated 276,082 of the 695,273 signatures collected by ResponsibleOhio. The total is short of the 305,591 needed to place the “Marijuana Legalization Amendment” before voters. The group plans to collect the needed signatures.

In Mahoning County, 5,290 signatures were valid with 6,561 not valid. In Trumbull County, 3,054 were valid with 3,600 invalid. In Columbiana County, 176 were valid and 150 were invalid.

Police ID suspect

LOWELLVILLE

Police have identified a suspect in the explosion of a homemade cannon near McGill Street and Grant Street on Saturday, Capt. Donald Coppola said.

An overpacked cannon exploded like a pipe bomb, and the blast injured three people and caused damage to several homes and vehicles, officials said.

Coppola said one victim suffered shrapnel in his leg, the second victim suffered injuries to his lower back and forehead and the third victim complained of hearing loss.

Man robs Farmers bank

MINERAL RIDGE

A man wearing a curly wig and gray sweat pants robbed the Farmers National Bank, 3826 state Route 46, at 12:56 p.m. Monday.

The robber got money and ran away, according to information released by Trumbull County 911.

There were no customers in the bank at the time, and the robber was not wearing a mask and didn’t appear to have a gun or other weapon.

Police were looking for a silver Chevrolet Blazer with front-end damage. Police also were checking for surveillance video at area businesses.

Facing assault charges

A Pennsylvania woman is charged with two counts of assault after a fight at an area bar.

Employees at Lanai Lounge, 7631 South Ave., reported Friday that customer Margaret Malone, 24, of Beaver, Pa., attacked them.

Malone reportedly bit a bartender’s hand when he attempted to break up a fight between her and another bartender.

The incident reportedly began when a bartender asked Malone to leave the business due to extreme intoxication and because she was bothering other patrons, such as by lifting up her dress.

Malone posted bond, and is scheduled to appear in area court here today.

Robbery at Subway

Township police are investigating a reported robbery at a Subway at 5020 Youngstown-Poland Road.

An employee reported Sunday that a man wearing a wig and sunglasses entered the store, then handed over a note that said he was armed and to give him money.

The suspect got away with $320, and then fled.

Charged in assaults

AUSTINTOWN

A township man is charged with two counts of felonious assault after reportedly assaulting and threatening his wife and mother-in-law.

Police responded to a Burkey Road home Sunday in reference to a domestic dispute.

The purported victims said that William J. Murphy III, 28, damaged property, put them in choke holds, threatened to hit them with baseball bats and a brick, and attempted to run his wife over with a vehicle.

Murphy reportedly was uncooperative and aggressive with police officers, paramedics and hospital personnel. He was taken to the hospital after complaints of chest pains and difficulty breathing.

Murphy was then taken to the Mahoning County jail.

Fight leads to 4 arrests

LOWELLVILLE

A fight Sunday at the Mount Carmel Society bar on East Washington Street led to four arrests.

Police arrested Mathew Savon, 27, of Youngstown; Matthew Wolfe, 27, of Lowellville; Raphe Neapolitan, 27, of Boardman; and Raymond Carlson, 22, of Hubbard, on charges of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. Carlson also faces a charge of assault.

According to a police report, three officers arrived at the scene and Officer Robert Younger used pepper spray, which caused an “older man to collapse from the pain of the spray.” The report states that Officer Ian von Gordon assisted the elderly man.

Low-cost rabies shots

Dr. Suzanne Wilcox, CEO of Steel Valley Spay Neuter Clinic, 405 S. State St., announced that she and her staff will provide low-cost rabies vaccines at her veterinary clinic from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. through July 31.

Dogs, cats and ferrets can receive the required rabies vaccine for just $15 per pet. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County.

No appointment is necessary for this special rabies-only vaccine offer, but a few rules do apply. Payment must be in cash, an adult must be present, animals must be leashed and wear a secure collar or harness, and all cats must be brought in carriers.
