Mercy Health Youngstown is offering diabetes education from 6 to 8:30 p.m. today, Wednesday and Thursday at Hospice House, 9803 Sharrott Road, Poland.
Health-care professionals who teach the course are certified by the American Diabetes Association. During the first session, they focus on the medical aspects of the disease such as medications, glucose monitoring, exercise and complications. The second and third sessions focus on learning to plan meals, count carbohydrates, interpret food labels and make positive food choices.
“These classes provide participants with the knowledge they need to manage their diabetes and avoid the long-term complications the disease can cause,” says Kay Leonhart, manager of diabetes education for Mercy Health Youngstown.

Man Up night

Friday is Man Up Mahoning Valley Night at the Mahoning Valley Scrappers.
For every box seat purchased using the code “MANUP,” fans will receive a $2 discount on the price of the ticket, which is regularly $10, and Man Up Mahoning Valley will receive $3.
Man Up Mahoning Valley, which is supported by the Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley, formerly HMHP Foundation, seeks to eliminate prostate cancer in the Mahoning Valley by providing free prostate cancer screenings and education to area residents.
The first 1,000 fans through the gate on Man Up Night will receive a free foam finger.

SlimDown program
YOUNGSTOWN
Mercy Health Youngstown, formerly Humility of Mary Health Partners, offers SlimDown, a six-week weight-management program, beginning Aug. 20 at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, 1044 Belmont Ave.
Classes are from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursdays through Sept. 24. The cost for first-time participants is $40. The cost for individuals who have taken the class before is $20. Mercy Health employees are free. Parking is also free.
SlimDown teaches participants to manage their weight by making lifestyle changes with regard to food, physical activity and behavior.

Volunteer training
CALCUTTA
Hospice of the Valley is offering training sessions for new companion volunteers from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Fridays from Aug. 7 through Sept. 4 at Martin Maclean Altmeyer Funeral Home in Calcutta. They will visit hospice patients in Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties.
Volunteers will learn what Hospice of the Valley’s team of doctors, nurses, social workers and chaplains do for patients and their families and how they fit into that team. Volunteers serve as companions for hospice patients at home or in nursing homes, support family members and may assist with indirect patient services. Volunteers must wait one year after the loss of a loved one before they can become a volunteer.
