Carter, Mathias hit HRs as Scrappers rout Crosscutters

WILLIAMSPORT, PA.

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers managed just four hits and didn’t score in a loss to Williamsport on Sunday, but their bats came alive Monday night.

Mark Mathias and Jodd Carter homered and four Scrappers each had three hits in a 12-4 rout of the Crosscutters in front of 1,495 fans at Bowman Field.

Mathias, Emmanuel Tapia, Nathan Winfrey and Daniel Salters each had three hits and Willi Castro, Carter and Silento Sayles each had two. The Scrappers finished with 19 hits.

Carter hit a two-run home run in the top of the second inning and also singled, walked and finished with four RBIs. Mathias homered leading off the third and also added a single and a triple.

The game was tied at 4 after five innings, but the Scrappers (x-x) took the lead for good with three runs in the seventh. They added two in the eighth and three more in the ninth.

Shao-Ching Chiang started and pitched five innings for the Scrappers. James Stokes (1-1) pitched two scoreless innings for the win. Cortland Cox and Yoiber Marquina each worked a scoreless inning.

The Scrappers open a six-game homestand tonight against the Staten Island Yankees at Eastwood Field in Niles.
