Scrappers’ offense struggles in loss

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers managed just four hits in a 1-0 loss to the Williamsport Crosscutters in a New York-Penn League game on Sunday at Bowman Field.

Scrappers starter Leandro Linares (0-4) got the hard-luck loss, giving up one run on three hits in five innings. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.

Brock Hartson (two-thirds of an inning), Dominic DeMasi (two innings), Billy Strode (one-third of an inning) held the Crosscutters scoreless the rest of the way.

Sam Haggerty, Emmanuel Tapia, Austin Fisher and Daniel Salters each singled for the Scrappers (10-18), who are 101/2 games behind Williamsport in the Pinckney Division standings.

Mahoning Valley is batting just .242 as a team this season, which ranks 11th in the 14-team NYPL.

Luke Leftwich (1-0) started for Williamsport and got the win, holding the Scrappers to three hits over five innings with three strikeouts and one walk.

Anthony Sequeira pitched the final two innings for his second save.

Zachary Coppola had two hits and drove in a run for the Crosscutters (21-8). Austin Bossart singled and scored.

The Scrappers finish the three-game series today, then return home for six games beginning Tuesday against Staten Island.
