The Masters and U.S. Open champion beat Tom Gillis with a par on the second hole of a playoff. ... Fowler won the Scottish Open at Gullane, hitting to 18 inches for birdie on the final hole. Matt Kuchar and Raphael Jacquelin were a stroke back.

Notes: Spieth is the fourth player since 1960 to win the first two majors of the year. Arnold Palmer (1960), Jack Nicklaus (1972) and Tiger Woods (2002) all failed to make it three straight in the British Open. ... McIlroy withdrew after injuring his left ankle playing soccer. ... Woods won at St. Andrews in 2000 and 2005 and Royal Liverpool in 2006. He won the last of his 14 major titles in the 2008 U.S. Open. ... Last week: In Gee Chun won the U.S. Women’s Open at Lancaster in Pennsylvania, beating South Korean countrywoman Amy Yang by a stroke. The 20-year-old Chun birdied four of the last seven holes for a 4-under 66 and an 8-under 272 total.

Notes: Ko won the Women’s Australian Open in February and the Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic in California in April. The 18-year-old New Zealander has seven LPGA Tour victories. ... In 2012, Ryu made six straight birdies in a final-round 62 en route to a seven-stroke victory. ... Paula Creamer opened with a 60 in her 2008 victory. ... Last week: Martin Piller won the Boise Open for his fourth tour title, leading wire-to-wire for a six-stroke victory. He shot 61-63-65-67 for a tournament-record 28-under 256 total, the second-lowest 72-hole score in tour history and the third-best mark in relation to par.

Notes: The David McLay Kidd-designed course overlooks San Francisco’s East Bay. ... The tour is off next week. Play will resume July 30-Aug. 2 with the Utah Championship.
