A free workshop on Aug. 2 will provide tips to high school students who want to forge a career in the performing arts.

The three-hour workshop, dubbed Pathways in the Arts, will begin at 1 p.m. at St. Michael Church, 300 N. Broad St.

The following local artists will share their knowledge with potential artists and their parents:

JD Eicher, a full-time musician and songwriter, and leader of rock band JD Eicher and the Goodnights.

Jim Merhaut, a life coach, professional musician and writer, who has made the arts a part of his career.

Becky Heikkinen, a professional counselor and educator, as well as a specialist in theater arts.

Although the workshop is free, participants must register by July 27 by sending an email to artsdiscernment@gmail.com with name of artist and all persons attending, year graduating from high school, area of creative interest and phone number.

The workshop will include a presentation by each of the three professionals, group discussions, question- and-answer sessions, and resources designed to help begin a career in the arts.

Unlike many careers, there is no definitive pathway to become a working artist, said Eicher.

His goal is to offer guidance to students, and their parents, who would like their career to involve the arts.
