BOARDMAN

Akron Children’s Hospital’s Vision Center is moving to a larger ophthalmology space on the Akron Children’s Mahoning Valley Beeghly campus, 6505 Market St., on Monday .

The center is relocating from the Boardman Medical Pavilion adjacent to St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital, 8401 Market St.

The Vision Center, which diagnoses and treats a range of eye diseases and disorders in newborns to teens, will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays in Room C1100 in Building C.

The center has three pediatric ophthalmologists offering surgical capabilities and a pediatric residency-trained optometrist. The center’s doctors treat patients with vision-correction needs including eye injuries, retinopathy of prematurity, eye-muscle problems, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, and glaucoma and cataracts.

“Our new center will include two exam rooms, two testing rooms and additional space, allowing us to perform certain types of diagnostic tests that we currently send patient families to Akron to have done. We’ll be able to do nearly every test and procedure locally,” said Richard Hertle, director of pediatric ophthalmology and Akron Children’s Vision Center, in a statement.

‘Most Wired’ again

AKRON

A survey named Akron Children’s Hospital as one of the country’s “Most Wired” hospitals for the third year in a row.

The 2015 Most Wired survey and benchmarking study measures information-technology use and adoption among hospitals nationwide. The survey examined how organizations are leveraging IT to improve performance for value-based health care in the areas of infrastructure, business and administrative management, quality and safety and clinical integration.

The number of patient families that activated online portal accounts jumped nearly 700 percent at Akron Children’s between 2013 and 2014. Patients and their families can refill prescriptions, make appointments, access test results and send messages to their providers through the portal MyChart.

“The Most Wired designation reflects a dedication to making sure we have the best technologies and resources to deliver high-quality and safe health care through the organization,” said Tom Ogg, chief information officer for Akron Children’s, in a statement. “Our patients are the real beneficiaries of this commitment.”

Sleep Medicine Center

SHARON, PA.

Sharon Regional Health System will open its Sleep Medicine Center, 719 E. State St., on the second floor across from the hospital, on Monday.

The center will have sleep technicians monitor the heart rate, respiratory system, muscle activity, oxygen levels, brain activity, sleep movements and body position during a sleep study.

The information is reviewed by a sleep physician to determine an appropriate course of treatment by evaluating an individual’s sleep patterns.

The sleep studies would help individuals that may not be aware of a sleep disorder, which typically include fatigue, lack of motivation, and excessive daytime sleepiness; anxiety, depression, and irritability; loud snoring or gasping for air while sleeping; pauses in breathing or racing heartbeat during the night; restless sleep; morning headaches; difficulty concentrating or learning; waking up frequently; and nighttime sweating.

Sleep studies will be offered five days a week with patients arriving at the center at 8 p.m.

For information, or to arrange for a sleep study, call 724-983-3945.
