Liberty trustees review township finances

LIBERTY

The state auditor’s office has determined that Liberty Township is in a state of fiscal caution due to the negative balance of its general fund – but that the township still should be allowed to operate.

The township’s general fund ended the month of June with a negative balance of $32,850. Fiscal officer Steve Shelton said at a township trustee meeting Monday that the negative balance was “not necessarily because of spending,” but rather due to transfer of money from the general fund to the fire department fund.

The fire department fund ended June with $90,424. Shelton said the township is working to raise funds and get out of fiscal caution. He said that the township’s finances will be “solid” for the next few months, but that the township may have to ask for a loan beginning in November.

Police Chief Richard Tisone informed the board of plans to open a tow yard on West Gypsy Lane. Tisone said fees from the tow yard would generate funds for the township. Trustees passed legislation at Monday’s meeting setting the flat rate for towing at $135.
