Authorities say one person has died in a crash involving a Franklin County sheriff’s deputy in Columbus.

The crash occurred around 9 a.m. Monday on the southwest side of the city. Chief Deputy Jim Gilbert tells The Columbus Dispatch a deputy driving an SUV was responding to another deputy’s call for assistance pursuing a driver who was believed to be drunk.

The deputy in the SUV was pursuing the suspect when he collided with a van pulling out onto the same road. The driver of the van, 77-year-old Nyal Brown, was ejected and declared dead at the scene.

The 39-year-old deputy was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the car initially being pursued crashed about 2 miles away and was taken into custody.
