Universal’s ‘Minions’ swarms box office
LOS ANGELES
Universal’s “Minions” overran the box office over the weekend as audiences in the U.S. and Canada shelled out an estimated $115.2 million to see the evil-master-serving horde frolic on the big screen.
It was the second-biggest opening for an animated film and an easy win for the sidekicks who took the spotlight after playing supporting roles in two previous “Despicable Me” movies. The bright, babbling baldies have become key characters in the franchise from Universal’s Illumination Entertainment.
Rounding out the top five were: “Jurassic World,” $18.1 million, second place; “Inside Out,” $17.1 million, third; “Terminator Genisys,” $13.7 million, fourth; and “The Gallows,” $10 million, fifth place.
Miss Oklahoma wins 2015 Miss USA title
BATON ROUGE, La.
Twenty-six-year-old Olivia Jordan of Oklahoma has won the 64th annual Miss USA contest, beating out 50 other women from states around the country and the District of Columbia.
Ylianna Guerra of Texas, 22, was named first runner-up.
The competition had been narrowed down to five finalists also representing Rhode Island, Maryland, and Nevada before the winner was crowned Sunday night.
This year’s contest, in Baton Rouge, La., had been largely overshadowed by comments made by pageant co-owner and real estate mogul Donald Trump while running for president.
Trump criticized Mexican immigrants in comments that led to widespread fallout against his business dealings including the pageant. He wasn’t present at Sunday’s pageant.
