MILL CREEK PARK | Park leadership to discuss pollution solutions with congressman's office

CANFIELD

The Mill Creek MetroParks leadership tomorrow will meet with a representative from the office of U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan to discuss possible solutions to the sewer overflow from the city of Youngstown's system led to a massive fish kill in Lake Newport.

Lou Schiavoni, president of the board of park commissioners, called the situation an "environmental emergency" at a packed meeting Monday.

"This park is the crown jewel of our community," he said. "For us to have what's happening now, it's a crying shame."

"We're going to look at all avenues to get this taken care of ... not in 20 years, but as soon as we can," he said.

The park leadership announced Friday that it would close lakes Cohasset, Glacier and Newport until further notice due to elevated E. Coli levels.
