Homeless man turns himself in to jail after breaking church window

YOUNGSTOWN — Police said a man turned himself in about 9:35 a.m. Sunday at the Mahoning County jail, 110 Fifth Ave., for breaking a window at a Wick Avenue church while a service was going on.

Clifton Jennings, 52, told police he was homeless and he broke the window because he wanted to go to jail, reports said. Reports said after he broke the window at First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Ave., he walked to the county jail because he did not want police officers to hurt him, reports said. Reports said Jennings told officers he is not allowed in the Rescue Mission because he is schizophrenic and hears voices.

As an officer talked to Jennings in the lobby of the jail, another officer was sent to check the church for a broken window and found one. Reports said the caretaker of the church said the window was broken while people were inside the church.

Jennings is expected to be arraigned today on a charge of felony vandalism.
