LOWELL, MASS.

Nathan Winfrey’s two-run double in the ninth inning helped bail out his pitcher from a bad start.

Winfrey’s double scored Ka’ai Tom and Emmanuel Tapia as the Mahonin Valley Scrappers (7-14) overcame a first-inning four-run deficit for Saturday’s 8-6 victory over the Lowell Spinners.

The Spinners (13-9) roughed up Scrappers starter Kieran Lovegrove for four runs in the first inning.

After the Scrappers tied the game with two runs in the second and third innings, the Spinners regained the lead with two runs in their third at-bat.

The Scrappers wiped out the 6-4 deficit by scoring one run in the fifth and sixth innings.

Sam Haggerty, Silento Sayles, Li-Jan Chu and Emmanuel Tapia each drove in a run for the Scrappers. Chu and Tapia each had two hits including doubles.

Cortland Cox (1-0) tossed four innings of scoreless relief to earn the victory.
