Ted Strickland raised $1 million for his Senate campaign between April and June
YOUNGSTOWN
Ex-Gov. Ted Strickland, a Democrat running in the 2016 election for the U.S. Senate, raised $1 million between April and June.
That’s more than he raised in the year’s first quarter, but is significantly less than U.S. Sen. Rob Portman, the Republican incumbent.
“We feel very good about this strong quarter, which will add to the already growing momentum around Ted’s campaign,” Dennis Willard, Strickland’s campaign spokesman, said Thursday.
In comparison, Portman raised $2.9 million in the second quarter. That’s on top of the $2.75 million he received in the first quarter. Portman has more than $10 million cash on hand.
Strickland raised more money between April and June than he did during the year’s first quarter, in which he collected $671,073. He has $1.2 million cash on hand after spending about $450,000 between April and June to open a Columbus office, campaign around the state and hire staff.
The amount Strickland raised is close to what other Democratic candidates in competitive Senate races are receiving, according to his campaign.
Strickland told The Vindicator earlier this week that Portman will “have more money than me, but I’ll have enough money to get my message out.”
Portman is among the top fundraisers among candidates running to get elected to the Senate next year.
Portman said Thursday, “I’m very encouraged by what we’re doing,” and “it’s important to have the money to get your message out.”
A recent Quinnipiac Poll shows Strickland ahead of Portman 46 percent to 40 percent.
During the first quarter, Cincinnati Councilman P.G. Sittenfeld, also seeking the Democratic nomination for Senate, raised $757,043, more than Strickland. Sittenfeld’s campaign expects as early as today to announce how much money it raised in the second quarter.
