Salem's first car to be meeting topic

SALEM

When it meets Tuesday, the Salem Historical Society will feature “Del Davis — Builder of Salem’s first Automobile” as presented by Don Mathews.

The 7 p.m. meeting is open to the public and will take place at the Dale Shaffer Library’s meeting room, 239 S. Lundy Ave., with parking suggested in the city municipal parking lot on South Lundy.

Davis was superintendent of the Salem Electric Illuminating Company (SEIC) and the Salem Electric Railway system. He built an electric “horseless carriage,” which debuted July 31, 1900. It subsequently was featured in Scientific American magazine.

Greeter for the evening will be Cathy Hale, and Pat Pinkerton will provide refreshments.

For information call the society at 330-337-8514.
