The Boardman library hosted Lego My Library on June 13. Librarian Allison Graff led the class, instructing students to go through the “Lego Buffet” – a table with plates to fill with Legos – and take the materials back to their seats to see what they can create over the course of one hour.
Graff said this event was a very relaxed program for those trying to get into a summer-mode frame of mind.
“We like having kids be able to come here and create without a lot of structure,” Graff said.
The idea for this building form of creativity came from the implementation and focus of STEM – science, technology, engineering and mechanics – in the schools.
When students attend programs like this one at the library they get to check it off of their list following the Summer Discovery Program offered by the local libraries.
In addition to checking it off of their list and getting to create with Legos, Graff said her favorite part comes with the hidden literary component in Lego My Library.
“When I go around and they tell me their name and age, I ask them to tell me what’s going on in their Lego scene,” Graff said. “I get some very detailed descriptions.”
Graff said she enjoys the imagination involved in those stories.
Lego My Library has been an ongoing program for a few months and will continue to be offered twice a month during the summer and once a month once school resumes.
