Four charged in death of New Castle man

NEW CASTLE, PA.

City police have charged four people in the death of a man here in May.

Frederick D. Swillings, 24, of New Castle, was found dead with several gunshot wounds on Hoffmaster Road on May 1. The suspects, all from New Castle, fled to Alabama, but they later were extradited back to the area.

The four are Ricardo Aponte Jr., 32; Dawn Wallace, 33; Melissa Aponte, 33; and Ryan Avery, 24. They all are charged with homicide and robbery-related charges. They are in the Lawrence County Jail pending arraignments at a later date.

Traffic accident knocks out power

NEW SPRINGFIELD

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating an accident in Springfield Township that shut down state Route 170 between East Garfield Road and Dixon Road in Columbiana County for a time Thursday and disrupted electrical service.

Springfield police got a call at 5:52 p.m. that a driver lost control of a vehicle and knocked down a utility pole. The driver, who was not identified, was uninjured, but the accident caused outages for more than 500 customers in Springfield and Beaver townships in Mahoning County and Unity and Middleton townships in Columbiana.

Ohio Edison sent out a crew for repairs and maintenance. Power was expected to be restored by late Thursday, an OE spokesman said.

Assault investigation

An employee at a center for developmentally disabled individuals was put on leave after a report he assaulted a client, according to a police report.

A supervisor at Beyond Expectations, 590 E. Western Reserve Road, reported Wednesday that an employee witnessed the suspect striking the purported victim on the arm.

The purported victim did not have any visible injuries and did not require medical attention, according to the report. The incident is under investigation.

Boil advisory lifted

The boil-water advisory for Sarah Avenue in Champion Township has been lifted, according to the Trumbull County Sanitary Engineer’s Office.

Newton Twp. detour

NEWTON FALLS

Pritchard Ohltown Road between South Canal Street and West River Road in Newton Township will be closed Monday through July 24 for a culvert replacement.

The recommended detour route is north on West River Road, northwest on state Route 534 and south on South Canal Street.
