1990: Citizens in four Northeast Ohio counties and a national nonprofit group are hoping their efforts will result in the conversion of a 66-mile abandoned rail line from Ashtabula to Lisbon into a recreational and bike trail.

Bob Furney, who retired after teaching music for 14 years at Boardman Center Middle School and was high-school band director at Brookfield and North Jackson, continues performing throughout the Mahoning Valley and on the fair circuit with the Bob Furney Show Band, the Bob Furney Jazz Band, the Bob Furney Orchestra and the Bob Furney Dixieland Band.

The Youngstown Area Board of Realtors names Anne DeLaCroix, president of Poland-based Del Realty, “Broker of the Year” and Stephanie Bozin of Liberty-based Northern Hills Real Estate “Salesperson of the Year.”

1975: A 16-year-old East Side boy is shot in the leg and a 19-year-old Poland man is struck with a baseball bat during a gang fight in the parking lot of Pemberton Pool.

Two young men are killed when their car rams a pole on Route 46 near Route 422 while being chased by Trumbull County Sheriff’s deputies and Howland police for questioning in a Mecca Township burglary.

John L. Whitman, 42, formerly of Warren, is shot and killed in the nightclub of a Bangkok, Thailand, hotel he was managing in the American sector of the city. His family said the Niles McKinley High School graduate stayed in Asia after serving with the Green Berets in Vietnam.

1965: Walter H. Paulo retires as Isaly Dairy chief executive but remains chairman of the board and a director.

Ohio state senators pass and send to the governor an unenforceable law requiring all cars to have litter bags. Supporters felt the publicity might make a dent in the $541,000 annual bill to remove litter.

Youngstown police credit Hubbard Patrolman Rodney Wales with solving the hit-skip death of Frank Gregarace, 11, who was struck by a red truck on Coitsville-Hubbard Road. Before the accident was reported, Wales noticed a red truck driven by a man he had arrested before for speeding driving east on East Liberty Street. After a report of the accident was broadcast, Wales followed a hunch and located the damaged truck.

1940: Five slot machines and a pinball machine are confiscated by Mahoning County Sheriff Ralph Elser and his deputies as they make a second foray into Youngstown, raiding five purported gambling spots.

The government’s plan to have the Packard Motor Car Co. build 9,000 Rolls Royce airplane engines – 3,000 for this country and 6,000 for Great Britain – is delayed when the Packard board of directors votes to give it “further study.” The government turned to Packard after Henry Ford refused a contract because of his aversion to building war materials for a foreign country.
