Reds’ Frazier in new Home Run Derby

The Reds’ Todd Frazier is paired with two-time champion Prince Fielder of Texas in the first round of Monday’s All-Star Home Run Derby in Cincinnati.

In this year’s new format, Chicago Cubs rookie Kris Bryant is in a pairing with the Los Angeles Angels’ Albert Pujols, Toronto’s Josh Donaldson is in a bracket with the Chicago Cubs’ Anthony Rizzo, and Los Angeles Dodgers rookie Joc Pederson takes on Baltimore’s Manny Machado.

The Frazier-Fielder winner faces Donaldson or Rizzo, and the Bryant-Pujols winner goes against Pederson or Machado.

Brackets were based on season home run totals through Tuesday. Each batter gets five minutes per round, and home runs in each batter’s final minute stop the clock. Players can earn up to 1 minute, 30 seconds of bonus time based on home run distance.

Cancellation of Redskins trademark ordered

A federal judge has ordered the Patent and Trademark Office to cancel registration of the Washington Redskins’ trademark, ruling that the team name may be disparaging to Native Americans.

The ruling Wednesday by Judge Gerald Bruce Lee affirms an earlier finding by an administrative appeal board. In his 70-page ruling, Lee emphasized that the organization is still free to use the name if it wishes — the team would just lose some legal protections that go along with federal registration of a trademark.

The team had sued to overturn a ruling against it by the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. The team argued that cancellation of its trademark infringed on its free-speech rights because it required the government to judge whether the name is offensive. The organization can appeal.

Judge sets retrial date for Vandy rape case

NASHVILLE, Tenn.

Two former Vanderbilt football players who were previously convicted of raping an unconscious student have been scheduled to be retried Nov. 30.

The new date came Wednesday after a Nashville prosecutor told a judge that he wants former players Brandon Vandenburg and Cory Batey to be retried as quickly as possible. They had been convicted on multiple charges of rape and were being held in jail awaiting sentencing when a judge set aside their guilty verdicts last month.

The request to set aside the verdicts came after defense attorneys were alerted that the jury foreman was a victim of statutory rape as a teen but didn’t disclose that.

Park focusing on 3rd US Women’s Open title

LANCASTER, Pa.

Inbee Park’s focus sharpens during major championship weeks, and the South Korean is dialing in for the U.S. Women’s Open.

Park is back atop the rankings for the third time in her career and leads the LPGA Tour with three wins this season. But the majors have been where she has flourished, with six major titles including five of the last 12.

Park and her game received a jolt two weeks ago when she missed her first cut of the year at the NW Arkansas Championship. Park has tried to move past her dreadful putting that week and says she favors the atmosphere of majors. She says previous good results boost her confidence in premier events.

Greipel wins again at Tour de France

AMIENS, France

The “Gorilla” is unbeatable in the sprints at the moment.

Andre Greipel, who has earned the moniker because of his powerful stature, was a class apart in the sprint to the finish line in Amiens, posting his second stage win with a stunning burst of acceleration after opening his account last week in the Netherlands. It’s been an excellent Tour for Germany so far, with its riders winning three stages out of five and grabbing the race leader’s yellow jersey with Tony Martin.

“Three stages and the yellow jersey for Germany, it’s unbelievable,” Martin said. “We could not have dreamed of a better start. It’s good for the fans. We’ve restored our credibility.”
