Police probe after homeless man beaten with baseball bat

YOUNGSTOWN — Police reports said a homeless man was hospitalized after he was beaten with a baseball bat Wednesday.

Officers were called to the makeshift tent city underneath the Fifth Avenue bridge about 6:05 p.m. and found a 49-year-old man lying on a set of railroad tracks bleeding from the head.

Reports said two witnesses told officers that the victim was beat with a baseball bat by someone they know. A bat was found nearby, reports said and taken for evidence.

The victim and a witness were both taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, although reports did not say why the witness was taken to the hospital.

Reports noted the victim and one of the witnesses appeared to be very drunk.
