The Mahoning County Board of Elections will have a free app for smartphones, starting Sept. 2, to provide information to voters.

The information on the app includes letting people know if they’re registered to vote, where to cast ballots – including directions how to get to polling places – as well as election schedules, and election results.

The board was going to pay $23,500 to a company based in Nepean, Ontario, Canada, to create the app, but will have the work done at no cost by CivicPlus, a Manhattan, Kan., company that is finalizing negotiations to redo the county’s website, said Joyce Kale-Pesta, the board’s director.

“We want to provide as much information as we can to our voters with this app,” she said at Tuesday’s board of elections meeting. “Not only will you find your voting location with this app, but it will tell you how to get there with Google Maps.”

Also, the board certified the candidacies of everyone who filed to run in the November election in Campbell and Sebring.

In Campbell, there is more than one candidate for mayor, law director and 2nd Ward council.

Those running for council president and the three other wards on council are unopposed.

In Sebring, the mayor and two council candidates are running unopposed.

The board also decided that it will print its own ballots for the special Aug. 4 election in the city of Canfield rather than seek proposals for the items.

Canfield is the only community with an issue on the August ballot.

City officials are seeking approval from voters to increase its 1 percent income tax to 1.5 percent.
