Funds for Head Start
YOUNGSTOWN
U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, a Cleveland Democrat, announced more than $7.6 million in federal funds to support Head Start and Early Head Start programs run by D&E Counseling Center in Youngstown. The funds were awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Head Start is a federal program that provides young children from low-income families with programming to prepare them for school. Early Head Start focuses on children from birth to age 3.
These programs include health, nutrition and social services.
Concerns about trees
POLAND
Village council heard from residents during a discussion about whether to remove dead ash trees in Poland Municipal Forest.
During public-comment portion of a meeting Tuesday, residents, including members of the forest board, expressed concerns about any measures that would disturb the forest’s natural state. Others agreed it might be best to remove those trees that pose a danger to forest visitors.
Council did not take action and will continue discussions with the forest board and residents.
Hagan’s new position
YOUNGSTOWN
Ex-state Rep. Robert F. Hagan will be the director of political and legislative affairs for the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, effective Monday.
Hagan, a Youngstown Democrat, will be based in Washington, D.C. He resigned from the state board of education, effective July 1. But he will remain a Democratic state central committeeman despite being based out of Washington.
Michele Lepore-Hagan, his wife, succeeded him representing the 58th Ohio House District after he couldn’t seek another term because of state term-limit laws.
Hagan has worked 44 years on the railroad and is a CSX locomotive engineer. Hagan will lobby for legislative issues and handle political education.
Boil advisory issued
CHAMPION
The Trumbull County Sanitary Engineer’s Office has issued a boil advisory for its customers on Sarah Avenue in Champion Township until further notice.
A boil advisory means residents need to boil water used for drinking or ingestion to a rolling boil for three to five minutes. The reason for the advisory is a waterline break.
Block Watch to meet
YOUNGSTOWN
The Four Square Block Watch will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday at Greater Friendship Baptist Church, 646 Lakewood Ave. A guest speaker will discuss code enforcement in the neighborhood.
